Concept: This intensive class will look at how surface strategies—texturing, carving, pattern and color—can strengthen and expand our sense of form. Rather than treating the surface as a separate element, students will integrate it into their making and thinking processes. Using green wood, we’ll explore a variety of techniques and methods that will enhance the natural qualities, embellish, or even entirely change the surface of turned and/or carved wood bowls and vessels. Students will use a variety of hand and power tools, and experiment with dyes and paints as well as adding other materials. Initially, students will focus on turning/tool techniques and fluid tool use, with a special emphasis on the deep fluted bowl gouge. Simple, straightforward methods of hollow turning will be covered as well. The class will also cover form and design and sources of ideas and inspirations. above all, students will be encouraged to experiment and explore.

Media & Techniques: Green wood. Bowl and hollow vessel turning; carving and texturing with a variety of hand and power tools; sharpening turning and carving tools.

Activities: Daily routines involve demonstrations as well as plenty of time for hands-on work time. There will be impromptu demonstrations when appropriate, as well as class discussion, interaction and critique. Students will be encouraged to pursue their own areas of interest.

Skill level: Levels III - IV (Minimum Skill Level III)

Faculty: John Jordan is known for his turned and textured hollow vessels, and has taught and lectured in nine different countries. His work is in many private and corporate collections, as well as in the permanent collections of more than 25 major museums.

Dan Bailey is a self-taught turner. He has been a very popular teacher at Anderson Ranch for many years and has also taught at Arrowmont and the John C. Campbell School.
