AWFS Vegas able to find silver linings

06_AWFS_01Established in 1911, the Association of Woodworking and Furnishing Suppliers is approaching its 100th anniversary. The association has been through the best of times and the very worst. This year's AWFS Vegas fair in July illustrated that the AWFS has built and sustained a solid foundation. While attendee and exhibitor turnout was significantly lower than previous fairs, participants - exhibitors and attendees - held their heads up as they trudged along.

Small donation has big impact on theater

small_donation_11Thinking and acting locally is all part of the equation for Daniel Gugnoni, owner of Troy Brook Visions Inc., a maker of fine furniture in Litchfield, Conn. Gugnoni recently designed and created a custom podium for the Warner Theatre in Torrington, Conn., which he donated to help renovation efforts for the historic theater and illustrate his enthusiasm for what the theater represents.

custommade_launches_09A revamped version of CustomMade.com was launched in May to better link custom woodworkers to prospective clients seeking their services. The Web site was purchased in January by Boston-based CustomMade Ventures, a privately funded corporation led by CEO Mike Salguero and board chairman Seth Rosen.

Furniture Society focuses on production

furnature_society_09The Furniture Society's annual conference was a success in terms of the well-attended presentations and overall satisfaction of the membership. The conference, held June 10-13 at Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C., played on the region's strong history in manufacturing and the theme, "Industrious: The Design, Craft & Commerce of Furniture Making."
