On some weekend mornings, Scott Strobel can be found driving around the Yale University campus in New Haven, Conn., with his Stihl chainsaw in the back of his truck. When a historic tree at Yale is cut down, Strobel usually receives a call and cuts some chunks so he can turn them into bowls and pens. What started out as a hobby has turned into a small business called Yale Bowls, named in homage to Yale's historic football stadium.

Halfway around the world, there is an avid woodworking enthusiast spending much of his retirement creating miniature hand-tool models. His name is Merv Deith and he lives in the small town of Elimbah, which is approximately 30 miles north of Brisbane in Queensland, Australia. His creations include 1:8 scale models of planes, chisels, saws, hammers, gauges, hand drills and more.

The Pennsylvania WoodMobile, a sustainable wood products classroom on wheels, welcomed its millionth visitor in August thanks to a group of 40 students from the Solid Foundation Education Association of Port Matilda, Pa.

Smithsonian exhibit

The exhibit, "A Revolution in Wood," celebrating a gift of 66 turned and carved wood pieces given to the Smithsonian American Art Museum by collectors Fleur and Charles Bresler, runs through Jan. 30, 2011 at the Renwick Gallery.
