Accoya USA, manufacturer of a sustainable wood product called Accoya, recently announced updates on the progress of its 100,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility in Kingsport, Tenn. Groundbreaking took place in June 2022 and commercial operations are expected to begin in mid-2024.

The move to the new facility will open distribution opportunities for the company, whose current processing facility is based in the Netherlands.

“North America represents the largest potential market for Accoya, and the new plant will ensure a ready supply of Accoya to the U.S. market. Once operational, the Kingsport facility will only supply the North American market, representing an additional 67 percent increase in capacity compared with 2022 volumes worldwide,” says Rod Graf, general manager of Accoya USA.

The new facility is a joint venture between Accsys, the only producer of acetylated wood in the world, and Eastman, a global special materials company. As part of the joint venture, Accsys will leverage Eastman’s acetyl production capabilities to produce its Accoya wood products.

The two companies say they are behind making Accoya a wood that lasts for decades in both indoor and outdoor applications. The process begins with Radiata pine that is sourced from FSC approved forests in New Zealand.
