The Association of Woodworking & Furnishings Suppliers will host the Belt Sander Racing Association National Championship Race at the July 15-18 AWFS fair in Las Vegas. The final race will take place at 4:30 p.m. PST July 16.
In 2008, the qualified racers for the national championship race competed in seven regional races across North America for a chance to race in the finals at the Las Vegas Convention Center. They competed in Stock or Modified classes. The Modified class gives racers the option to alter their belt sander's motor, drive system and electric systems. Belt Sander Racers in both classes are encouraged to dress up and decorate their belt sanders. The sanders race on a 75-foot track consisting of two lanes and modified belt sanders can reach speeds of 17 mph.
A single entrant can enter up to two sanders and a shop can enter multiple sanders. At the race track, each sander can be supported by a pit crew of two people. Trophies will be given to the first-, second- and third-place finishers. Additional awards will be handed out for Best Design and Judge's Choice, which could go to the biggest wreck.
