General International has added a 10" hybrid table saw with an initial price tag of less than $1,000.

"We're excited about it, "says General's Norm Frampton. "It's a new model that has a lot of potential uses in terms of the different types of customers who would be interested in it. It's got enough power to be a professional shop saw and it's also quite suitable for the home hobbyist. It would be a good primary or secondary saw for a small- to medium-sized cabinet shop. The price point makes it very attractive.

"The table is full cast iron and we've got enough weight to it to make it a sturdy machine."

The 2-hp, left-tilt saw - model 50 200R M1 - features a combination riving-style splitter/blade guard assembly with anti-kickback pawls and a separate European-style riving knife.

But the saw's biggest selling point, besides the introductory price of $999, might be the ruggedly built saw carriage with solid cast-iron, cabinet-mounted trunnions.

"We put it on our granite-top model, which was introduced last year," says Frampton. "It makes the alignment of the table to the blade that much easier so we went with a similar design."

The saw comes factory-wired for 230-volt operation, but the dual-voltage motor can be easily switched to run on 110 volts.

With the two extension wings, the table size measures 44" x 27". The base measures 20" x 20" and the whole saw weighs in at a little more than 300 lbs. It has a large motor access door and is supplied with an aluminum T-style rip fence, steel guide rails and "deluxe" miter gauge. An arbor lock allows for one-tool blade changes and an extremely large paddle-style stop switch is mounted under the front rail.

The saw offers a 3" maximum depth of cut at 90 degrees and 2-1/4" at 45 degrees.

The saw will be available in stores by late August or early September. A 36" table board ($90) and adjustable steel support legs ($39) are offered as accessories.
