Makita has introduced two redesigned 3-1/4-hp plunge routers, models RP1800 and RP2301FC, with increased plunge capacity and some other enhancements.

"Essentially they are the same routers with additional features such as LED lights, which are very useful in cabinetmaking where light can be scarce. They also feature an electric brake, which is useful with a large router like this," says Joe Soto, Makita's product manager.

The RP1800 has a 15-amp motor producing 22,000 rpm. The variable speed model RP2301FC produces 9,000 to 22,000 rpm with electronic speed control to maintain constant speed under load, according to Makita.

Both routers offer a plunge depth capacity of 0" to 2-3/4" and a lock-on trigger for continuous operation. The depth adjustment has a micro control and three preset depth stops.

The routers' flattop design and shaft lock aids in bit changes, while a template guide system can be installed and removed without tools. Both models weigh in at 13.4 lbs.

The RP1800 sells for $259 and the RP2301FC for $329.

Makita has also introduced a new 1-1/4-hp router, model RP0900K, which weighs only 6 lbs. and has an overall height of 8-1/2".

"What's neat on this router is that it's very compact and lightweight and it gets enough power to do a lot of detailed finish work. You don't have to worry about the weight or having too much power," says Soto.

The flattop router features an 8-amp (27,000 rpm) motor and offers a 1-3/8" plunge depth capacity. It sells for $159.
