VERITAS LAPPING PLATE is designed to condition or smooth previously ground surfaces such as plane soles, blades and chisels, and is used with light mineral or honing oil and silicon carbide abrasive grit. The iron plate weighs about 14 lbs. and measures 12" x 4-1/8" x 1-1/8". It is machined on the bottom and sides, and the top is ground flat to within 0.001" over the entire surface. The channel design, optimized for a figure-eight lapping pattern, serves to eliminate resistance from hydraulic lock and captures excess oil, abrasive and slurry, according to Lee Valley. The Veritas lapping plate sells for $85. Silicone carbide lapping grits are available from 90x to 600x and sell for $3.80 to $5 each. A set of five lapping grits costs $19.90.
