WOODWORKING WITH THE ROUTER, by Bill Hylton, is an all-inclusive router manual ideal for professionals and serious amateurs. It offers tips on myriad routing tasks, such as cutting decorative edgings and moldings, surfacing wood for glue-ups, shaping furniture parts, cutting curves, raising panels, cutting joints, making jigs and more. Of particular interest is the section on proper usage of router jigs in making through and half-blind dovetails. Hayden points out that the actual machining of the dovetails takes only a few seconds, but the setup of the jig itself is a critical and time-consuming part of the job. Feature boxes, called "Try This!" randomly appear throughout the text offering tips. One box suggests testing cutting depth on scrap before using good wood. A lap cut, for example, removes half the thickness of the stock, so a pair of test cuts is necessary. Two lap cuts at opposite corners should just barely merge in the center of the stock. Hayden has been writing about woodworking for more than 20 years. His dozens of books on the topic include "Router Magic" and "Illustrated Cabinetmaking." The 376-page hardcover sells for $29.95. DAVID THIEL'S POWER TOOL MAINTENANCE,provides cleaning, repairing and tuning tips for table saws, miter saws, band saws, planers, routers, jigsaws, sanders, drills, jointers and lathes. Thiel, senior editor at Popular Woodworking magazine and host of "Tools and Techniques" on the DIY Network, gives an in-depth look at the functions and parts of each tool. For example, he suggests that readers inspect the mounting plate and washer of their miter saw if it is not cutting straight. A synthetic scouring pad can be used to remove any rust or dust buildup that could affect the blade's spin, and a photo illustrates that procedure. The 128-page softcover sells for $24.99. UNIQUE WOOD LAMINATION PROJECTS, by Jerry Syfert, presents 13 step-by-step projects designed to add skill-enhancing fun to any shop.Woodworkers of all levels can create the striking clocks, boxes and puzzles out of colorful laminate blocks they also make themselves. Final projects involve geometric and abstract variations such as herringbone and checkerboard designs. This book is basically about developing skills in creating laminations. Once the technique of creating laminations is perfected, the laminations may then be used by slicing them into veneers for other projects such as cutting boards, Lazy Susans or serving trays. Syfert has been producing wood products for 15 years. He frequently displays and sells his work in arts and crafts galleries. The 88-page softcover sells for $19.95.
