COUNTRY PINE FURNITURE PROJECTS, by Bill Hylton, is for woodworkers who love to build timeless country furniture, and appreciate the clear instruction for which the author, a master furniture maker, is known. It includes 32 projects, large and small, from a corner cupboard to a candle box. Hylton presents step-by-step instructions, exploded diagrams, patterns and plans, and material lists for classic furniture that is affordable and easy to build. Projects include a large Amish wardrobe, a corner cupboard, small candle boxes, a case of drawers, footstools, hanging shelves, desks and tables, and can be made using just the table saw and router. Each traditional project includes photographs of an actual antique, as well as the finished reproduction. Hylton has been writing about woodworking for more than 20 years and is a regular contributor to Woodworker's Journal. Contact: Fox Chapel Publishing Co. RADFORD'S PRACTICAL BARN PLANS, edited by William A. Radford, is a classic reprint of the book first published in 1909. The Radford Architectural Co. was a major American supplier of building plans in the early 1900s. Originally designed as a teaser to sell full sets of plans, it is still useful as a general guide to the overall design of basic farm structures. Although primarily on barns, the 100 designs also include icehouses, smokehouses and sheds. With more than 300 illustrations, it is a good source of ideas for anyone considering the construction of an outbuilding. The 290-page softcover sells for $10.95. Contact: Lee Valley Tools Ltd., P.O. THE ART OF FINE WOODTURNING, by S. Gary Roberts, is an instructional guide for turners of skill levels. It skips the beginner lessons and jumps right into 33 projects, which include spindle turning, open bowls and lidded boxes. Each project is narrated from start to finish and accompanied with dimensional drawings. Suggestions are made for wood selection and, in some instances, finishing. Roberts is a founding member of the American Association of Woodturners and has written for several woodworking magazines, including Woodshop News. The 160-page softcover sells for $17.95. WOOD BENDER'S HANDBOOK, by Zachary Taylor, teaches theory and technique to woodworkers of all skill levels. It covers cold- and dry-bending; laminating and kerf bending; hot water, steam and hot air bending; and other techniques. Each method is accompanied by recommendations on which wood works best, while nearly 200 full-color photos cover every stage of the process. Also, a handy chart shows the bending qualities of the 25 most important woods, as well as the desired effects for any designs. Projects in later chapters include oval boxes, walking sticks, boat ribs and chair backs. The 144-page softcover sells for $19.95.
